Top seed Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the Mexicano open due to a left wrist injury.
The world No.14 got off to a shaky start in Mexico after recovering from a set down to beat Polona Hercog in the first round of the tournament. Following her win over Hercog, Azarenka admitted in her post-match press conference that her main focus in Mexico wasn’t winning the title but ‘working on her game’. The Belagrussian gave no indication at the time that she was experiencing any wrist issues.
It is reported by ESPN Mexico that Azarenka woke up on Wednesday morning with pain in her left wrist. She undertook some exercises earlier in the day to test her wrist, but failed to overcome the pain. Due to the circumstances, it was confirmed that she has withdrawn from the event.
There is currently no information available concerning the extend of her injury. The withdrawal has elevated Dominika Cibulková to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Despite withdrawing, Azarenka will reportedly remain at the tournament to spend time with fans at the venue. She will hold a press conference at 17:00 CST (23:00 GMT) to discuss the extend of her injury according to Mexican media sources.
