TENNIS – Phillip Kohlschreiber beat Dominic Thiem 6-0 7-6 (8-6) to qualify for the final of the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel. The German put an end to Thiem’s 10-match winning streak which includes his two consecutive triumphs in Umag and Gstaad. Diego Sampaolo
Kohlschreiber did not convert four break point chances in the second set before fending off a set point in
the tie-break. He converted his first match point for 8-6 in the breaker.
The German is bidding for his sixth career title. He lost the 2012 final in Kitzbuhel against Robin Haase
“I had a fantastic start. I succeeded with everything I tried. In the second set I made some unforced errors.
That helped him back into the match”, said Kohlschreiber.
Kohlschreiber will take on former Number 12 Pierre Henry Mathieu from France who beat Nicholas
Almagro 6-4 6-3 qualifying for his first final since Hamburg in 2009.
Mathieu broke serve for the second time in the match for 5-4 in the first set. The Frenchman reeled off the
first four games of the second set before converting his first match point with an ace.
