TENNIS – Camila Giorgi clinched her first career title after beating Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic 7-5 6-3 at the s’Hertogenbosch event. It was fourth time lucky for Giorgi who lost her previous three WTA finals. Diego Sampaolo
The Italian player never faced a single break point against Bencic, dropping only 19 points for the entire match. The 1st set went on serve until the 12th game when Giorgi converted her first break point which was also set point for 7-5.
Both players remained on serve until Giorgi produced her best point of the match up 4-3 when she broke Bencic at love to take a 5-3 lead. Giorgi then served out the match taking it on her first match point 7-5 6-3. Giorgi hit 8 aces and with 2 double faults. The young Italian player dedicated her first title to her father and coach Sergio Giorgi. Giorgi is the second Italian player to win the Dutch grass tournaments four years after Roberta Vinci.
Earlier this week Giorgi had to save 3 match points in the quarterfinals where she beat Yaroslava Shvedova despite the 23 double faults she made. She is the 4th player this year who had to save match points and went on to win the tournament. Andrea Petkovic in Antwerp, Sara Errani in Rio de Janeiro and Daniela Hantuchova in Pattaya City all saved match points and won the tournament.
ATP 250 in s’Hertogenbosch: Mahut beats Goffin in the final
French qualifier Nicolas Mahut beat David Gofin 7-6(1) 6-1 to clinch his second title at s’Hertogenbosch in two years after his first triumph in this tournament back in 2013.
The 1st set went on serve without breaks as Mahut went down 0-40 on his serve at 4-all. He saved the break points after a forehand miss by Goffin. However, in the tiebreaker, Mahut seized control as he clinched it 7-1 points.
In the 2nd set, it was all Mahut. After holding serve in the opening game of the set, Goffin found himself facing the charge of the Frenchmen. Mahut reeled off 6 straight games breaking Goffin three times in the process. The Frenchman wrapped up the match with a volley to take it 7-6 6-1.
