American tennis may be struggling to rediscover itself and could well be on the way to a second successive World Group playoff in September but there’s one thing it can always depend on and that’s a point in the doubles rubber. The Bryan brothers were expected to deliver and they did but it was perhaps a lot closer than many would have predicted.
The world’s greatest doubles pairing stormed to a two set lead after breaking Jamie Murray’s serve on four occasions. Buoyed by what has been a stellar crowd all weekend, Great Britain got themselves back in it winning the third set and took a nail biting fourth set in a tie break which included a crunch game where the hosts saved three break points and also a match point with a backhand return from Dominic Inglot.
The fifth set was just as tense and no inch was being given between either pairing until the Bryans broke at 7-7 and served it out to take a huge 9-7 win in the fifth set which keeps the Americans alive in the tie.
Bob Bryan said after the encounter that “the fifth set was a very emotional set. I think everyone was feeling the nerves and physically we don’t play three hours and forty minutes all the time. We are happy to get through. It was just a couple of good shots there at the end. We’re stoked to keep this team alive”.
Ahead of tomorrow’s reverse singles which kick off with Andy Murray v John Isner, USA captain, Jim Courier stated that “we have some momentum going into tomorrow and we needed a breath of life. We’re going to have to rise to the occasion all day tomorrow to punch through and get a victory here”.
