Simon, who reached the semifinal in Rotterdam last week after beating Andy Murray in the quarter final, claimed his second title in Marseille and his 12th career win to become the second best French player in history behind Yannick Noah who claimed 23 titles.
Monfils dropped just one game in the second set forcing the match to the third set. Simon broke at the start of the third set but he dropped serve before coming just two points from defeat as she was serving in the 12th game. The match was decided by the tie-break where Simon claimed his second win in Marseille. The Nice player won his first Marseille title in 2007.
“It was a great week but a tough one physically. I left a lot of energy against Borna Coric in the second round and it was hard to recover from this one”, said Simon
Monfils hit 11 aces and broke serve five times but committed 54 unforced errors. He has not won a title since Montpellier in 2014.
