Flavia Pennetta won her only head-to-head match against German Julian Georges in Palermo in 2010. The Italian reached the semifinal at Flushing Meadows last year and the quarter final three times in her career. Georges reached the third round as her best result in New York but played well in recent Grand Slam tournaments, notably beating Sara Errani in the first round at this year’s Australian Open.

After both players traded breaks in the first two games, the match went on serve until 3-3. Pennetta got the double break and clinched the first set with 6-3. In the first set Georges committed 21 unforced errors and hit just 6 winners.

The second set started with a trade of breaks exactly as in the first set. Pennetta saved three break points at 2-3 but Georges managed to get a break. She managed to hold serve until the end of the second set. She wrapped up the second set with 6-4 forcing the match to the third set.

Pennetta took a 2-0 lead at the start of the third set but she had to save three break points. Pennetta won the next two games to 5-0. Georges avoided a bagel before Pennetta closed out the third set to set up a second round match against Shelby Rogers

The good day for last year’s US Open semifinalist and 2014 Indian Wells champion Flavia Pennetta was competed by her boyfriend Fabio Fognini who beat Kazakhstan’s Golubev in three sets with 6-4 6-4 6-2

Ana Ivanovic cruised past Allison Riske 6-3 6-0. Riske got an early break but from then on Ivanovic took control of the match closing out the first set in 37 minutes. Ivanovic won the second set with a bagel to book her berth in the second round where she will play against Karolina Pliskova who beat Yvonne Meusburger with a double 6-2 6-2.

Ivanovic has won 48 matches this year, more than any other player on Tour reaching the top ten for the first time in more than five years. Earlier this month Ivanovic beat Maria Sharapova in three hard-fought sets in a fantastic semifinal before losing to Serena Williams in the final in Cincinnati. the last tournament before New York

Canadian young star Eugenie Bouchard, who lost the Wimbledon final against Petra Kvitova, and the semifinal in the other two Grand Slam Tournaments in Melbourne and Paris, eased past Olga Govortsova with 6-1 6-2. After both players held serve in the first two games Bouchard reeled off four consecutive games to wrap up the first set. She stormed to 3-0 in the second set before closing out with a comfortable 6-2 in just 59 minutes.

With this performance Bouchard dispelled the doubts on her shape following her difficult hard-court season in which she lost in the second round in Toronto against Shelby Rogers with 0-6 6-2 0-6 in her first match after the Wimbledon final. She lost again in the second round against Svetlana Kuznetsova in Cincinnati,
