Flavia Pennetta won her only head-to-head match against German Julian Georges in Palermo in 2010. The Italian reached the semifinal at Flushing Meadows last year and the quarter final three times in her career. Georges reached the third round as her best result in New York but played well in recent Grand Slam tournaments, notably beating Sara Errani in the first round at this year’s Australian Open.
After both players traded breaks in the first two games, the match went on serve until 3-3. Pennetta got the double break and clinched the first set with 6-3. In the first set Georges committed 21 unforced errors and hit just 6 winners.
The second set started with a trade of breaks exactly as in the first set. Pennetta saved three break points at 2-3 but Georges managed to get a break. She managed to hold serve until the end of the second set. She wrapped up the second set with 6-4 forcing the match to the third set.
Pennetta took a 2-0 lead at the start of the third set but she had to save three break points. Pennetta won the next two games to 5-0. Georges avoided a bagel before Pennetta closed out the third set to set up a second round match against Shelby Rogers

Ivanovic has won 48 matches this year, more than any other player on Tour reaching the top ten for the first time in more than five years.
