Eighth seeds Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz beat world number 1 doubles team Marcelo Melo and Mate Pavic 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (8-6) in 1 hour and 38 minutes to become the first German doubles team to win the title in the 55-year history of the ATP Finals.
Krawietz and Puetz finished the 2024 season as World number 4 in the ATP Live Doubles Ranking. It’s the third time that Krawietz has finished a season in a team inside the top 5.
Krawietz and Puetz have become the lowest team to clinch the title at the Nitto ATP Finals. The German team beat Arevalo and Pavic twice in the round-round and in the championships match to improve to 5-2 in their head-to-head matches against Arevalo and Pavic.
Both players went on serve en route to the tie-break. Krawietz and Puetz went up a mini-break twice, but Arevalo and Pavic pulled back on serve to draw level to 4-4. Krawietz and Puetz sealed the tie-break with their third mini-break.
Arevalo went down 2-3 15-30 in the second set, but he hit two first serve winners and a volley to hold serve. Krawietz and Puetz earned three mini-breaks, but Arevalo and Pavic pulled back each time. Krawietz and Puetz sealed the win with a fourth mini-break when Pavic made an error at the net.
“I don’t know how to put it into words. It’s an amazing achievement from us. I am very proud of us, we are proud of the whole team, everyone at home. To end the year here winning the title. It’s unbelievable”, said Krawietz.
