Alexander Zverev moved past Marcos Giron 6-2 7-5 in 73 minutes to reach the quarter final at the Erste Bank Open at Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna.
Zverev hit 10 aces and converted all three break points he earned to clinch his 61st win of the season. His previous season high for win was 60 in 2018.
Zverev won four consecutive games with two breaks to seal the first set 6-2. The second set went on serve until the 12th game when Zverev earned the break on his first match point.
The German player has reached at least the quarter finals on each of his appearances at this tournament, where he lifted the trophy in 2021. The German player will face Lorenzo Musetti, who advanced to the quarter final after his opponent Gael Monfils was forced to withdraw due to illness.
Zverev has improved his ATP head-to-head series to 3-0 against Giron.
Zverev is chasing his second title of the season following his triumph in Rome. With his win over Giron Zverev joined world number 1 Jannik Sinner as the only player to reach 14 tour level quarter finals in 2024.
Matteo Berrettini battled past Frances Tiafoe 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 after 3 hours and 4 minutes.
Berrettini saved two break points in the first game of the opening set. The Italian player converted his second break point in the fourth game and held serve at 15 to open up a 4-1 lead. Tiafoe saved two set points to hold serve, as he was serving to stay in the set. Berrettini served out the first set at love.
Berrettini fended off five break points in the second game of the second set. The 2021 Wimbledon player broke serve in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead. Tiafoe saved three match points, when he came back from 3-5 down and 4-6 in the tie-break of the second set. The US player won the final four consecutive points to win the tie-break 8-6.
Tiafoe broke serve in the first game of the third set. Berrettini broke straight back in the second game before saving a break point in both the third and fifth games. The former number 6 player earned the decisive break in the sixth game to take a 4-2 and served out the win on his second match point.
Berrettini saved 15 of the 17 break points he faced. He won 71% of his first points and hit 52 winners to 39 unforced errors.
Berrettini will face the winner of the match between Karen Khachanov and Brandon Nakashima.
