Holger Rune’s disastrous season continues in Hangzhou as the Dane lost in the second round to Yasutaka Uchiyama.
It was a 7-5 6-4 defeat for Rune as he lost in 100 minutes to the Japanese qualifier as his miserable last few weeks continues.
The Dane looked like he was having momentum on his side in America, having reached the semi-finals in Cincinnati.
However a first round exit to Brandon Nakashima at the US Open has brought Rune back down to earth and another opening match exit in Hangzhou has added to Rune’s woes.
On the other side of the net it was joy for 32 year-old Uchiyama who is into his first ATP quarter-final and was clearly delighted by the result, “I’m very excited, I’m happy with my performance today,” Uchiyama explained to the ATP website.
“I couldn’t imagine winning in two sets, I was just thinking about my performance, I had to play 100 per cent the whole match to get the chance to beat him, so it went well for me today.”
Now Uchiyama will face Marin Cilic in the last eight with Brandon Nakashima against Rinky Hijikata being the other match in the top half of the draw.
