Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova is out of the US Open after losing to Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4 7-5 in the second round.
The Czech Republican hasn’t had the best form since claiming her second Grand Slam title at SW19 and that showed once again in New York.
A straight sets defeat to the world number 122 sealed a bad run of recent form as Ruse moved into the third round.
As for Ruse an incredible display from the Romanian as she hit 26 winners and just 15 unforced errors.
After the match Ruse admitted she has no words after the biggest win of her career so far, “I have no words, I can’t believe it,” Ruse was quoted by the BBC Sport website as saying in her on-court interview.
“It was such a good match for me, Barbora is such a good player, she has won so many matches in the last two years and it’s a dream for me. To be honest I don’t know how I did it, I tried to hit every ball and do my game. I think my father is the lucky charm for sure.
“It’s his first time in the US so I’m super happy to be with him here. It is an emotional day for me and I want to say thanks to my team, especially my coach. We’ve had tough months, I was injured for a few months, so I’m really happy to be back.”
Now Ruse will face 26th seed Paula Badosa for a place in the second week after the Spaniard overcame Taylor Townsend 6-3 7-5.
It was a tough second round match for Badosa given Townsend had beaten Jelena Ostapenko and Daria Kasatkina heading into the US Open.
However Badosa recovered from a break down in the second set to defeat Townsend and now moves into the third round.
There was also a 6-4 6-0 win for Madison Keys over qualifier Maya Joint and will now play Elise Mertens in the third round.
