Lorenzo Musetti made a good transition from clay to hard court when he came back from one set down to beat Chilean player Nicholas Jarry 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) in his first hard-court match since Miami last March.
Both players went on serve until the seventh game when Jarry broke serve after a double fault from Musetti. Jarry held on his next service games to win the first set 6-4.
Musetti saved a break point in the first game of the second set. The Italian player earned two break points in the 10th game with a tweener. Jarry earned an early mini-break at the start of the tie-break, but Musetti pulled back on serve. The 2024 Wimbledon semifinalist earned another mini-break to win the tie-break 7-5.
Both players went on serve with no breaks of serve en route to the tie-break. Musetti earned his only mini-break to win the tie-break 7-4.
Musetti won the Olympic bronze medal in Paris, reached two finals in Umag and Queen’s and two semifinals in Stuttgart and Wimbledon.
Jarry hit 25 forehand winners and saved both break points he faced.
Musetti is 14th in the ATP Live Race to Turin and is aiming to join in the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
Musetti set up a match against Frances Tiafoe. Musetti and Tiafoe are 2-2 in their four head-to-head matches. “I am really happy to get the win today. I could not find my game in the fast conditions at the beginning. Coming from clay to hard is not the easiest thing to do, but I won two tie-breaks against a great server like Nico, so I am really happy with the fight. It’s been more than three months since I have played on hard court in Miami, but I have made so many results and achievements, so I am trying to keep this consistency in my work”, said Musetti.
