Sara Errani has completed the golden slam in doubles as her and Jasmine Paolini defeated Mirra Andreeva and Diana Schnaider 2-6 6-1 10-7.
The Italians claimed gold with a resilient win after Errani claimed the golden slam in doubles having won all four Grand Slam titles previously.
Although Italy claimed victory, it was far from easy for the Roland Garros finalists as they struggled to deal with Andreeva and Schnaider’s power early on.
Andreeva and Schnaider had already knocked out Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova during this tournament and showed their skills early on by taking a 4-1 lead.
Errani had to have an off-court medical time-out after the seventh game as she was struggling physically and the Italians were soon broken for a second time in the set as they lost the opening 6-2.
However some sharp returning in the second saw them make the perfect start as they broke in the opening game before creating three break points in the third game.
Although Andreeva and Schnaider held their serve, that was the only game they claimed in the set as the Italians broke on a further two occasions to claim the second set and force a match tiebreak.
After taking a 7-3 lead, Errani and Paolini got nervy and tight towards the end of the tiebreak but held their nerve to claim gold in what was a historic day for Errani.
Meanwhile earlier in the day, Spanish pair Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo claimed the bronze medal with victory over Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic.
