Holger Rune Splits From Federer’s Former Coach After Just Two Months

Holger Rune’s recent appointment of Roger Federer’s former long-time mentor to his team has come to a sudden end, according to his management.

In December the Danish world No.7 announced that he has started working with Severin Luthi, who is best known for his work with Federer between 2007 and 2022. Under the agreement, Luthi was working alongside Boris Becker, who is the tennis star’s other coach on the Tour. Becker was appointed to that position in October.

However, Luthi has now departed Rune’s team due to what is being described as availability issues. The role has now been filled in by fellow Dane Kenneth Carlsen.

“The timing with Severin was not quite right. Holger needs a coach who is with him all the time and a super coach (Boris Becker),” Rune’s mother and manager, Anke, told TV2.
“Severin will be able to cover too few weeks for the continuity that Holger needs,” she added.

Swiss newspaper Basellandschaftliche Zeitung tried to contact Luthi for comment on the matter but he declined to do so. It is unknown as to when the agreement to separate was made.

“It is absolutely right to expand the planned collaboration with Kenneth, with whom he also trained for several periods during his junior years,” Anke states.
“Kenneth has an extremely good knowledge of Holger’s game and person.”

The development comes after what has been a mixed start to the year for 20-year-old Rune. At the Brisbane International, he reached his ninth tour-level final before losing in straight sets to Grigor Dimitrov. Then at the Australian Open, he suffered a shock second round loss to France’s Arthur Cazaux.

Rune will return to action later this week at the Open Sud de France where he will be the top seed. His opening match will be against Spanish qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz.
