Nick Kyrgios has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament starting after being diagnosed with a fresh injury.
The 2022 finalist has been ruled out of the tournament after medical tests revealed that Australian has torn a ligament in his wrist whilst training in Mallorca. Kyrgios has only been able to play one match so far this season due to a knee injury which required surgery. Speaking to reporters in London on Sunday, he admitted that there are ‘question marks’ about how his body would hold up but at the time there was no mention of his wrist.
“I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year,” Kyrgios wrote in an Instagram post. “I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again.’ “During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon.”
The only silver lining for Kyrgios is that unlike other years he doesn’t have to worry about protecting his runner-up ranking points. The ATP removed the allocation of points at last year’s tournament in response to Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian and Belarussia players from participating due to the war in Ukraine.
It is the first time that Kyrgios is absent from the main draw at Wimbledon since 2013. The event is his most successful Grand Slam in terms of match wins with him winning 20 out of 28 played. Besides reaching the final 12 months ago, he was also a quarter-finalist in 2014.
Kyrgios was due to play David Goffin in the first round but will be replaced by a lucky loser.
