German qualifier Jan Lennart Struff beat Fabio Fognini 6-4 5-7 6-4 after 2 hours and a half to reach the second round at the Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Struff, who is now ranked 103 in the ATP Ranking, earned an early break in the second game of the opening set to take a 2-0 lead. Fognini broke straight back in the third game and saved two break points to hold serve for 2-2. Fognini earned his second break in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead after two forehand errors from Struff. The German player won nine consecutive points from 3-4 15-30 down to break straight back for 4-4. Struff broke serve in the 10th game to close out the first set 6-4.
Fognini wasted two break points in the first game of the second set before earning the break in the 11th game after a smash error from Struff. The Italian player served out the second set 6-4 at deuce.
Fognini did not convert a break point in the third game of the third set. Both players went on serve until the 10th game when Struff came back from 15-40 down to earn the decisive break on his first match point. Struff set up a second round match against Grigor Dimitrov.
