Jannik Sinner recently revealed his goals for the 2023 season. The 21-year-old Italian player reached three Grand Slam quarter finals at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and at the US Open in 2022, but he decided to end his 2022 season after losing to Marc Andrea Huesler in his first match at the Masters 1000 in Paris Bercy.

At the Australian Open Sinner reached the quarter finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in his career, becoming the fifth Italian player to reach that stage in Melbourne. He then lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.

At the Miami Open he saved three match points in the opening round against Emil Ruusuvuori and five match points against Pablo Carreno Busta to advance to the round of 16. Sinner then beat Nick Kyrgios but retired against Francisco Cerundolo. He retired in the fourth round against Andrey Rublev at Roland Garros.

At Wimbledon Sinner beat Carlos Alcaraz to reach his third quarter final before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

At the US Open he beat Ilya Ivashka in a five-set match to become the youngest player to reach the quarter finals at all four Grand Slam tournaments since Novak Djokovic in 2007-2008. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set match that lasted 5 hours and 15 minutes. This match set the record as the latest finish at 2.50 am.

“It’s been a tough season for me. I have had small problems in so many tournaments, but from another point of view I played many games, I got more continuous results with many quarter finals. It’s been an unlucky year, but in many ways I can be proud of what I have done”, said Sinner.

A finger injury forced Sinner to withdraw from the Davis Cup finals. The Italian star said in an interview to the ATP Podcast that his biggest goal for the 2023 season is to quality for the Nitto ATP Finals. Sinner is planning to start his 2023 season at the Adelaide tournament, which also features this year’s Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, 2022 Davis Cup champion Felix Auger Aliassime, world number 8 Andrey Rublev and two-time Olympic gold medallist and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.

“I am aiming for Turin. I want to give back to playing the Nitto ATP Finals. I know I can do it, but it will be decisive not to miss important matches and tournaments as I was forced to do this year”, said Sinner.

Sinner is training hard with his coach Simone Vagnozzi in preparation for the 2023 season.

“With Vagnozzi it is going very well. We work very hard from a physical point of view and now the most important phase for us will begin, the winter preparation. In these weeks we will have the opportunity to work hard. I am convinced that my body will be stronger. From a technical point of view, we will have the opportunity to fine-tune the innovations we have been working on this year.”
