Genie Bouchard was facing number two seed Anhelina Kalinina at the Transylvania Open and after one set was forced to retire due to an injury. She played the match with her knee heavily wrapped.
The former Wimbledon runner-up had said in an exclusive interview just a couple of days earlier that she was playing pain-free but went on social media to explain what had happened.
Bouchard mentioned that she had tweaked something in practice the day before and she didn’t think it was serious so she played through it but it got worse.
Finally, after playing one set of tennis she called the trainer and after a medical timeout decided that instead of taking any more risk she would call it quits to recover. Bouchard made a statement after the match that the tournament posted on their Twitter page.
” I am just disappointed to have ended my tournament in Romania this way because I really loved being here in Cluj. I pulled my hip flexor a few days ago in practice. I tried everything to be ready for this match”. She said.
“I got an MRI yesterday, and didn’t show anything too bad, so I thought I could play. But it was getting worse as the match went on. To avoid a big injury, I figured it would be best to retire. I absolutely hate retiring, I wish I could’ve done better here. But I hope to be back”
The Westmount native broke the Ukrainian in the first game of the match but the number two seed recovered to get the break back and broke the Canadian which was enough to claim the firsst set 6-3 before the mkatch came to a early end.
Bouchard is scheduled to play in Guadalajara and says that she will make the trip to play in the WTA 1000 tournament.
