Felix Auger Aliassime is the 2022 ABN-AMRO World Tennis Tournament champion after beating top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 18 minutes.
The Montreal native served seven aces and won 88% of his first-serve points in a match that he dominated from the baseline from start to finish to secure his first-ever title.
“I felt great and I played one of my best matches here (in Rotterdam) this week and couldn’t have asked for a better way to win the title, especially against a player like Stefanos winning comfortably and it’s one I will remember for a very long time.” Said Auger-Aliassime.
After holding his opening service game the world number nine went to work attacking the top seed with his powerful groundstrokes and managed to break his serve to take an early 2-0 lead.
That one break was enough for the Canadian to serve out the set and continued the similar pattern in the second set holding serve and breaking once again as it seemed the Greek had no answers to his game.
He went up a double break and took a commanding 4-1 lead and cruised from there and served it out from there to win his first tournament.
After the match in his post-match press conference, he spoke about the pressure of going into his ninth final and yet having to win one.
“I was fortunate to have a good start and get the break early and after that, I was serving well and really focused on holding my serve. I feel this year I am more mature and a better player”. He said.
The Canadian has risen to ninth in the world as of Monday with the win and will now travel to Marseille for the Open 13.
