The number two seed dominated the number one seed in straight sets in Sundays final in straight sets.
Anett Kontaveit is your 2021 Transylvania Open winner after the Estonian beat the number one seed and Romanian Simona Halep in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and nine minutes to win the title.
With the win not only does Konateveit win back-to-back titles but she now officially qualifies for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, Mexico at the expense of the Tunisian Ons Jabeur who was the first to congratulate her on social media.
“I am still unsure what is going on and of course I am incredibly happy that I managed to play really well today and win the final and that was the main focus and I am really proud of myself that I managed to do that.”
The first set stayed on serve until 2-1 when the world number 14 had a chance to get the first break of the match and she did just that with a double break following soon after that to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
She served out the first set in 28 minutes flat and it seemed like this match was going to be one-way traffic.
The Romanian who was determined to turn the match around started the second set by breaking the Estonian to love and was able to consolidate the break for a 2-0 lead.
The world number 14 responded by holding serve and breaking right back to put the set back on serve.
At 3-2 Kontaveit managed to get another break of serve and that was enough for her to serve out the match.
After the match in her post-match press conference, she was asked how she was able to fight back in the second set when she was down a break and managed to get back on track and win in straight sets.
“I got a little bit nervous and I just needed to shift my mind with what I have to do rather than what the score is and I just needed to find the balance between playing aggressive and getting my shots in and I managed to do that.”
Kontaveit confirms she will go home and rest for a few days before preparing for the final event of the year.
