The German booked his spot in Sunday’s final after beating the Greek in a three-set marathon match.

Alexander Zverev is into the final of the Western and Southern Open in Mason, Ohio after beating the world’s number three Stefanos Tsitsipas in three tight sets 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in two hours and 41 minutes.

The German hit 42 winners in a match that went back and forth while the Greek hit 35 unforced errors in the loss.

“I feel like every time I play with Stef (Tsitsipas) the last few matches have been extremely entertaining and I think there are very tough battles and we are bringing the best out of each other and it was the case today.”

The first four games of the first set went on serve and at 2-2 it was the German with the first breakpoint of the match and broke to take a 3-2 lead and that one break was enough for him to serve out the first set.

There was a bit of controversy during the break between the first and second set when Tsitsipas took a lengthy bathroom break and Zverev wasn’t pleased with it.

He argued that he took his bag which probably had his phone and Tsitsipas father who is also his coach was seen on camera sending text messages but the umpire Abdel Nour argued he couldn’t do anything about it.

The world number five kept the momentum going and managed to get the first break in the second set as well before saving three breakpoints the following game and consolidating the break.

At 2-1, the Greek finally struck back and managed to break the German serve to go back on serve at 2-2 and managed to get the break to take a 4-2 lead and served out the second set to force a third set.

The first two games of the third set went with serve and again it was the Greek who managed to the first break of serve of the set and turned that break into a double break lead.

The world number five managed to get one of the breaks back and at 5-4 with the world number serving for the match he faltered and the German took full advantage to break once again and put the set back on serve.

The match would be decided by a tiebreaker which was also a very tight affair but again the world number five managed to capitalize on a break and served out the match.

After the match, he spoke about how close it was between winning and losing the match tonight.

“One or two points to be honest and I felt if he holds serve to go up 5-1 I’m probably not going to win the match but I’m happy how it went and when I broke for 4-2 I started to feel a little bit better and I started believing in myself again and that was the key moment.”

He will now face the Russian Andrey Rublev in the final on Sunday after he won the all-Russian battle with the number one seed in a three-set battle 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a match that lasted two hours and 21 minutes.

There was also a bit of drama in that match as well as Medvedev while running to return a ball ran into the camera and injured his hand and kicked the camera out of frustration.

Zverev currently holds a 4-0 lead over Rublev in their head-to-head with their most recent meeting at the Australian Open back in 2020 which was a three-set win for the German.
