Mats Wilander fears for Roger Fedrer and Rafael Nadal’s hopes of winning another grand slam despite claiming that’s not the end of an era.
This comes after both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both ended their 2021 seasons with back and foot injuries respectively.
For Federer he will be having another knee injury in a hope to return next year while Nadal will be resting his foot in time for the Australian Open in January.
According to former grand slam champion Mats Wilander both players are unlikely to win another grand slam although it’s not the end of an era, “I don’t think it is the end of era,” the Swede said to Eurosport.
“It might be the end of winning Grand Slam tournaments but with Rafa and Roland Garros, the love affair he has over there, you can never say it’s the end of that relationship until he has held his rackets on the wall.
“With Roger Federer, you think with Wimbledon there is still a love story that needs to be had and he can still do well there. With every year you give the two of them less and less chance to win a Major but that doesn’t mean the era is over. I think the era of winning is over.
“But the era of filling the stands with Federer fans and Rafa fans and even Novak fans, that era is still alive. There is a couple more years of that. I am not sure they will be winning any more Grand Slams.
“I think Novak has a really good chance of winning more but even him it’s not going to be that easy with the young guys. But the era is still alive.”
While Federer and Nadal look to be back in 2022, Novak Djokovic will look to win a historic 21st grand slam at the US Open as he aims to win the calendar grand slam.
Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev are among those who are looking to stop him as the last grand slam of the year begins on the 30th of August.
