The Kazak and number 4 seed booked her spot in the final eight after her Swiss opponent was forced to retire with an ankle injury.

Yulia Putintseva the tournament number four seed only needed to play two games to advance to the quarterfinals of the International Strasbourg Open after Jil Teichmann was forced to retire down 2-0 in the first set with an ankle injury.

“It’s always difficult because I was ready to fight and unfortunately it is what it is but I am happy to go through and I wish Jil (Teichman) a fast recovery for the French Open”.

The match being played on court one was delayed by a few hours due to hard rainfall and we finally saw play with Putintseva holding her opening service game with no issues.

The following game the number four seed went on the offensive looking for the early break and she would set up two breakpoints winning a great point with a forehand down the line passing shot and would break the following point to take a 2-0 lead.

During the third game that’s when we saw the unfortunate injury when Teichmann would run to get a short ball and she would end up rolling her ankle. She laid on the ground for several moments before the trainer was called and got a medical timeout on the court.

After consultation she decided to retire and the Kazak had booked her spot in the next round and after her match she spoke about the raucous group of fans that had attended the match to support her.

“I thought it was pretty cool and I didn’t expect it at the beginning of the tournament being that it’s my first time in Strasbourg I didn’t know I had a lot of fans here and it’s always a pleasure especially after the difficult times of playing with no fans and it feels amazing to have support”.

Putintseva will now face the Pole Magda Linette in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
