Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan rallied from one set down to upset world number 24 Maria Sakkari 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 after 2 hours and 39 minutes in a late night match at Roland Garros. The World Number 159 set up a fourth round against world number 8 Kiki Bertens.
After a trade of breaks Sakkari broke three times in a row to win 6-1. Trevisan broke three times in the second set for 4-1 lead in the second set. Bertens pulled back one break in the sixth game. Trevisan got another break to build up a 5-2 lead. Sakkari pulled both breaks back to take a 6-5 by winning four consecutive games after saving two set points. Trevisan was two points from a straight-set defeat in the 12th game, but she was able to force the tie-break.
Trevisan went down 1-4 in the tie-break and saved two match points at 4-6 before winning four consecutive points to clinch the tie-break 8-6 forcing the match to the decider.
Sakkari went up a break in the first game of the decider. Trevisan broke twice in the second and fourth games to to open up a 4-1 lead. Trevisan saved three consecutive break points to hold serve for 5-2 after trailing 0-40. She saved another break point at 5-3 before sealing the win on her third match point in the ninth game.
“In the first set I was a bit confused. After losing the first set, I thought that I could not give up . I had to try my best, as it was the third round of a Grand Slam tournament”, said Trevisan.
