Gael Monfils and Benoit Paire led France to a 2-1 win over Chile in Group A of the ATP Cup in Brisbane.
Benoit Paire fended off 9 of his 11 break points to beat Nicolas Jarry 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 6-3 in the opening match. Jarry went up a set and a break, but Paire broke twice in the second set to force the match to the third set. Paire held serve at deuce, when he was serving at 4-3, before breaking serve in the next game.
“I was able to play well a couple of moments throughout the match, but when I had a little bit of more advantage by a set and a break, I lost a little of my head. I missed many things. I hesitated and doubted myself a little bit”,said Paire.
World number 10 Gael Monfils beat Christian Garin 6-3 7-5 to give France a 2-0 lead over Chile. Monfils broke once in the second game of the first set and came back from one break down in the second set with two breaks in the seventh and eleventh games to clinch the win in 80 minutes.
“It was great today. I think he had a good period in the second set. It shook me a little bit. I think slowly I got back in shape. I had a good pre-season and I had to stop because I hurt a bit myself during the pre-season. I came back a little bit stronger”,said Monfils.
Garin and Jarry beat Nicolas Maahut and Edouard Roger Vasselin 7-5 6-2 in the doubles match.
