Bianca Andreescu will have an MRI scan on her knee after retiring against Karolina Pliskova at the WTA Finals.
The Canadian suffered the knee injury at 2-1 and a break up in the first set when she planted her leg incorrectly while defending Pliskova’s power.
After receiving heavy strapping on the knee, Andreescu continued to play before retiring after losing the first set 6-3 against Pliskova.
During a coaching time-out at 3-2 down, the US Open champion revealed to her coach that she heard a crack in her knee and it was her meniscus that she injured.

In her press conference after the match, Andreescu revealed she will have a MRI scan tomorrow to see whether she can end her season on Friday against Elina Svitolina.
Speaking on her injury, Andreescu said that she was glad she stopped, “Maybe I could have pushed it more. I don’t know,” Andreescu was quoted as saying by WTA Insider on Twitter.
“My team said no. It was good that I stopped. Honestly, I could have kept going. If I did, then I would just be, like, whining on the court. I don’t want that. I’ve done that enough.”
Should Andreescu withdraw from the match on Friday then Sofia Kenin will play Svitolina instead, with the Ukrainian already securing her place as group winner.
Meanwhile the second spot from the Purple Group in the semi-finals will go to either Simona Halep or Karolina Pliskova who face each other on Friday.
It is a match that the world number two already knows will be a tough match to play, “Should be incredible match. I hope it’s going to be a good match to watch, too,” Pliskova said.
“I’m sure, because she’s putting a lot of balls back. The tennis with her, I feel it’s always good to watch. Of course, for me tough because there’s going to be a lot of rallies.”
The head-to-head is 7-3 in the Romanian’s favour but Pliskova won their last meeting in the Miami semi-finals.
