Monica Puig has reflected on her personal struggles after her 2019 season came to an end in Luxembourg.
The Puerto Rican has had a nightmare season having lost 24 of the 44 matches played in 2019, with her best result seeing her reach the semi-finals in Charleston.
A 24th and final loss of 2019 came yesterday when she lost to Julia Goerges 1-6 6-2 6-3 in the quarter-finals in Luxembourg.
Not only has there been struggles on the court for Puig but off the court as well having split up with Kamau Murray just days before the US Open after the American re-joined Sloane Stephens.
Now Puig is working with former coach of Daria Kasatkina, Phillipe Dehaes, after partnering up with Murray since the start of the year.
After finishing her season, Puig took to Instagram to reflect on her personal struggles which included a stunning admission that she struggled out of bed sometimes, “Taking the time to reflect on this 2019 season definitely hurts because there has been so much struggle and tough moments,” Puig admitted.
“Sometimes I didn’t know how I was going to manage to stay strong another day. I hit my ‘rock bottom’ and sometimes even getting out of bed was a challenge.
“However, in my darkest of moments, a voice inside of me told me to keep going and to keep believing, because something good was waiting for me at the end of this pain and struggle, and for that I couldn’t be more proud of my courage and fight.”

Despite the struggles for Puig, she now believes it is the end of her personal nightmare as she looks to rebuild in 2020, “Thankfully, I believe I reached the light at the end of the tunnel 5 weeks ago when I changed my team and was given a new beginning,” Puig explained in a lengthy statement.
“The people who have surrounded me in these tough times have undoubtedly helped me rise from the ashes and dust myself off to keep going and reach for my dreams and I am so thankful to have such amazing people in my corner that have helped me get back on my feet again.”
Having dropped 31 places in the world rankings since the start of the year, Puig will now look to rebuild ahead of a crucial year which includes defending her Olympic title.
