Elina Svitolina could meet defending champion Mihaela Buzarnescu in the second round of a star-studded line-up in San Jose.
The Ukrainian is the top seed and will be playing her first match since reaching her first grand slam semi-final at Wimbledon.
A match against defending champion Mihaela Buzarnescu could await Svitolina, who plays Daria Kasatkina in the first round.
Also in Svitolina’s section of the draw is 7th seed and last year’s finalist Maria Sakkari, who takes on Ekaterina Alexandrova in her first match.
After struggling for the first half of the season, the 24 year-old from Ukraine will look to be a serious threat at next month’s US Open.
Also in the top half of the draw is fourth seed and 17 year-old Amanda Anisimova, who reached the semi-final at Roland Garros earlier this year.
The American receives a bye in the first round and will play either Madison Brengle or Andrea Petkovic in her first test of the week.
There is also the Australian Open semi-finalist Danielle Collins, who begins against Shuai Zhang as Collins will look to make home soil count this summer.
Meanwhile in the bottom half of the draw there is a star-studded list of names which includes Victoria Azarenka, Venus Williams and the improving Donna Vekic.
At 39 years-old, Venus will still look to be a threat as she begins her San Jose campaign against Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
While Azarenka will look to continue her steady momentum against a qualifier as the 5th seed Donna Vekic begins against Misaki Doi.
There is also a return to action for Coco Vandeweghe after nine months out, she plays Marie Bouzkova with second seed Aryna Sabalenka awaiting in round two for the winner.
