The USTA have announced that this year’s US Open will feature hawkeye on every single court when the tournament begins on the 27th of August.
The US Open has been known for being the grand slam of innovation and this year is no different as every single match from the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles will have hawkeye. The US Open tournament director, David Brewer explained that it will help bring fairness to all matches in this year’s competition, “Having electronic line calling on all of our courts allows us to provide a level playing field for all competitors,” explained Brewer.
“The US Open has a history of innovation, and by becoming the first Grand Slam to feature this technology on all courts, we are proud to carry-on that tradition.” The US Open were the first slam to introduce hawkeye back in 2006 and ever since then have continued to introduce new innovative ways of improving the tournament. Last year the tournament had hawkeye on seven of their courts but have been allowed to use hawkeye on all courts this year after the transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which will be completed this year.
The transformation means that the new Louis Armstrong Stadium can be unveiled with a new capacity of 14,000 as well as a new retractable roof as well as 90% of the facility being transformed. Other features to be transformed include the practice courts, a new grandstand stadium and a redesigned southern campus.
