David Goffin narrowly avoided an exit from the French Open after saving four match points against Gael Monfils. The roller coaster clash was full of entertainment with both players exchanging words at one point in the match. Although they both played down the conversation afterwards by saying that their discussion was about Monfils’ disagreement with the umpire.
In total four French players exit the tournament on day 6. Joining Monfils was Richard Gasquet, Lucas Pouille and Pierre-Hugues Herbert. There was better news for Italian fans with both Fabio Fognini and Marco Cecchinato progressing to the last 16. Fognini outlasted Kyle Edmund in five sets and Cecchinato knocked out 10th seed Pablo Carreno Busta. It is the first time since 1976 that two Italian players have reached the fourth round of the men’s draw.
