World No.32 Feliciano Lopez found out he will be forced to miss one of his favourite tournaments in the near future. The 36 year-old veteran will not be able to take place in the US Men’s Clay Court Championships this year due to clashes with Davis Cup duty.
The left-handed Lopez has been selected by Spain captain Sergei Bruguera for his country’s quarter-final tie with Germany. Lopez had played most years since 2012, missing out in Texas in 2014.
Lopez sent a message to fans apologising for his absence “I regret to announce that I have to withdraw from @mensclaycourt one of my favourite tournaments for scheduling reasons.”
Lopez also asserted his pride in being selected to feature for a strong Spain team that at this stage also includes Rafael Nadal, Pablo Carreno Busta, Roberto Bautista Agut, and David Ferrer “I am very honoured to be representing Spain again in the Davis Cup at my home country.”
Lopez was part of the Spain team that won the Davis Cup in 2011. He defeated American Mardy Fish in five sets during the quarter-finals, as well as playing against Argentina in doubles in the final.
Lopez will be looking forward to the grass season later this year. The Spaniard finally won his first title at Queens, defeating Marin Cilic in a closely fought final.
