Renowned tennis commentator David Law has claimed that former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal’s leg injury is worse than first thought.
16-time Grand Slam champion Nadal was forced to retire from his Australian Open quarter-final against Marin Cilic in January before announcing that he will be out of the sport for at least six to seven weeks. However, he pulled out of the Mexican Open in Acapulco at the eleventh hour, citing the same hip trouble as the reason behind his exit from the event.
Subsequently, the 31-year-old southpaw withdrew from the Indian Wells and the Miami Masters on the advice of his doctors, who claimed it could to be career threatening for Nadal if he participated in any ATP event at this point of time. And on Friday, his doctor, Angel Ruiz Contorro, made a public statement about the state of Nadal’s injury. According to Contorro, Nadal’s injury has progressively got worse.
Tennis expert David Law shared similar views about Rafa’s injury. “It is (a worry) when you look at the list of tournaments that he has missed,” Law said on The Tennis Podcast.
“It dates back really to the US Open victory of last year.
“He played one or two after that but he missed out at the O2 of course, had that injury, came back, looked I thought pretty good in Australia for a while and then he pulls whatever muscle he pulls.
“That obviously must be a more serious injury than we thought because it’s the same thing that had flared up again here.
“He was ready to go in Acapulco, he went all the way there, pulled it in the practice session against Adrian Mannarino and he’s out for a bit.
“We were talking about if he could have a rest before the clay voluntarily, but he didn’t have this in mind.”
