Diego Schwartzmann has received a tribute from one of the most famous sports stars in the world after winning one of the biggest titles of his career.

Former football World Cup winning player Diego Maradona has sent his personal congratulations to the Rio Open winner. The diminutive Argentine thrashed former Australian Open semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-3 to win the title.

Maradona posted this message on Instagram:”I congratulate the Peque for his triumph got in Rio de Janeiro. I hope that he keeps earning positions, and I want to tell him that he has my admiration, the same that I feel for all who keep the Argentine flag at the top.”

As well as winning the title and the message from Maradona, Schwartzmann has further cause to celebrate. The 27 year-old moved to a career-high ranking of No.18 after picking up 500 ATP points for the win. He moves above the likes of John Isner, Andy Murray, and Roberto Baustista-Agut in the ATP rankings.

Maradona is well known for being a follower of tennis particularly of Argentinian players. He was seen in Zagreb as Argentine won the Davis Cup with a 3-2 win over Croatia. It was the country’s first Davis Cup title. The highlight of the tie was Juan Martin Del Potro’s memorable comeback from two sets to love down to defeat Marin Cilic in five sets.

Maradona is also often seen at the O2 Arena in London at the ATP Finals, especially in years when Del Potro qualifies. Maradona is also known as a fan of both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
