Former World No.1 Boris Becker has ruled himself out of contention to take the role as Alexander Zverev’s coach. However, the three-time Wimbledon champion will be providing some short-term support for the youngster over the coming tournaments.
Zverev, currently ranked World No.5, recently parted ways with another former World No.1, Juan Carlos Ferrero. The Spaniard had been coaching Zverev since the Citi Open in Washington DC last year. The pair parted ways recently, leaving a vacancy in Zverev’s team.
Becker: “I knew the situation about his coach.I like him a lot, he has a lot of talent, but I am the head of German men’s tennis and I feel very comfortable in my role. I am a dear friend of Alexander and his family. That’s why they will see me next to him in the next tournaments. However, wearing the DTB hat in my head. I also have some TV obligations.
Becker was speaking to Barbara Rittner, the head of women’s tennis in Germany.
Becker coached former World No.1 Novak Djokovic to six Grand Slam titles in what was one of the Serbian’s most successful spells of his career. The pair parted ways in 2016. Djokovic, who suffered an injury-hit 2017 season, now works with Becker’s former rival, Andre Agassi.
