Britain’s Australian Open semi-finalist Kyle Edmund has been forced to pull out of his next scheduled event in the Agrentina Open.
Edmund had been expected to take part in the tournament, set the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires, but a throat infection has forced him to withdraw. Edmund had set to be the sixth-highest ranked man at the event.
Edmund, at a career high No.26 in the world, reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. He earned victories over Kevin Anderson, Nikoloz Basilashvili, Denis Istomin, Andreas Seppi, and Grigor Dimitrov before losing to Marin Cilic.
Edmund had struggled in the early part of the season with a slight hip injury, and did not take part in Great Britain’s Davis Cup defeat to Spain, though he was part of the squad.
Portugal’s Gastao Elias has been moved to the main draw as a lucky loser. He’ll face surprise Quito champion Roberto Carballes Baena. Austria’s Dominic Thiem is the top seed in Buenos Aires. Other players taking part in Argentina include Gael Monfils, Pabloc Carreno Busta and Fernando Verdasco.
Edmund is expected to be available to take part in the ATP 500 event in Rio next week.
