World No. 2 Roger Federer has revealed the big secret behind his stunning 2017, which saw him winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles.
Former World No. 1 Federer’s future looked uncertain when he was forced to end his 2016 campaign six months before it was originally planned due to a knee injury. Eventually, the Swiss superstar required surgery and was out of the game during the second half of the year. However, when Federer returned to action he wasted no time in finding his groove and went on to have a stellar season in 2017.
The 36-year-old, who has shown glimpses of his imperious from last year in the ongoing Hopman Cup in Perth, has defeated all three of his opponents at the Pat Rafter Arena this week.
And Federer has disclosed, the reason why he is playing such great tennis is because he has got the confidence back in his game.
“I’ve maintained a high level in all three matches, which is a great thing,” Federer said after beating American Jack Sock in the Hopman Cup.
“This was another step up in terms of ranking and I thought it was a very entertaining match for both of us and we got to interact with the crowd, which was great.
“I thought it was a good step forward. It was a lot of fun.
“We sort of get the opportunity to try out things in the right fashion, without the chase of so many ATP points.”
And when he was asked about what is the main difference in his game now and twelve months ago, he maintained confidence was the chief contributor behind his super successful season in 2017.
“Yes [being more confident helps],” he added.
“I was 17 in the world last year and if I didn’t win two matches at Melbourne Park I was going to drop out of the top 30.
“So things were a little on edge last year.”
