Andy Murray is once again the sole British interest in the men’s singles at Wimbledon. Aljaz Bedene was the other man remaining in the draw, but he was beaten by the 16th seed Gilles Muller 7-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Muller breaks new ground at The Championships by reaching the fourth round for the first time. The first set was a close affair with the Luxembourger forcing break points in successive games at 5-4 and 6-5. Bedene saved both, but came undone in the tiebreak.
Bedene had had plenty of practice at passing shots in his marathon five set win over Ivo Karlovic in the first round. Muller is a serve-volleyer, but used more variety, and was able to engineer two breaks of serve to take a convincing two set lead.
A single break of serve proved sufficient for Muller in the third set. He will now take his place in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time.
Muller will face either Rafael Nadal or Karen Khachanov in the fourth round. Muller and Nadal have history at Wimbledon. Muller defeated the Spaniard in his second Wimbledon appearance back in 2005.
Muller will be a tough opponent for any player. He won the Den Bosch ATP 250 before reaching the Queen’s semi-finals. He is at a career-high ranking of No.26 that will improve regardless of his result in the fourth round.
