18-time grand slam champion Roger Federer delighted fans in his native country with a 6-3, 7-6(6), win over Andy Murray in an exhibition match held in Zurich, Switzerland.
The two players were taking part in the third instalment of Federer’s ‘Match For Africa’ fundraiser. The aim of the exhibitions is to raise money for the Roger Federer Foundation, which supports children in Africa. The organisation has set out a goal of supporting one million children by 2018.
Taking to the stage at the Zurich Hallenstadion on Monday evening, fans cheered as Murray and Federer engaged in a lighthearted battle. Wimbledon champion Murray displayed promising signs of playing pain-free after being sidelined from the tour due to an elbow injury. Still, it failed to prevent the inevitable outcome of Federer winning.
“I thought it was a good match. I had a great time.” Said Federer. “ I can’t thank Andy enough for coming tonight.”

Federer’s praised for Murray was swiftly returned by the Brit, who enjoyed being tested ahead of the clay-court swing of the tour.
“I enjoyed it, I haven’t played a match for five or six weeks. It was great to come out and play in front of this crowd against Roger. I appreciate him asking me to come and do this.” Murray said after the match.
“I was trying to get to the third set, I just couldn’t quite do it.” He added.
The night event has already raised over 1.4 million Swiss Francs (roughly £1.12M). The tally is set to rise with donations opened until April 18th.
Two men, two different plans
Shortly after their match, both players discussed their plans for the clay season. Unlikely Murray, Federer intends to take a break following a stellar start to the year. The Swiss has already won three titles, including an historic 18th grand slam title at the Australian Open in January. He is likely to return to action at the French Open in May.
“The body needs a rest, I can feel it. It’s not the youngest body, but everything is good.” He explained.
“I’m going to enjoy my time with my family. I’m going to get back into practice and when I do, it will be full steam (ahead) and then I should be back for the French Open.’
“That’s the plan. I’m looking forward to it. It should be an exciting year.”
In contrast, world No.1 Murray will grace his presence on the tour before Roland Garros. It is however unclear if he will be physically ready in time for next week’s Monte Carlo Open, a tournament he is yet to reach the final at.
“Monte Carlo starts one week today, so I’m hoping if I keep progressing (with the elbow) to play Monte Carlo. But if not I just need to be patient and try the following week.” A coy Murray said.
“I’m getting there, I just have to go slowly.”
Match For Africa 4
Later this month, Federer will travel to Seattle to play in the first ‘Match For Africa’ held outside of Switzerland. The event will feature world No.23 John Isner and Microsoft creator Bill Gates. A ‘special guest’ is also set to play in the doubles match.
“I can’t wait. It’s going to be an amazing month for my foundation.” The excited 35-year-old said.
The event will take place at the April 29th at KeyArena in Seattle, USA.
