Andy Murray is unlikely to feature in Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie against France after suffering a ‘tear in his elbow’ according to his brother Jamie.

The world No.1 hasn’t played a match since his shock loss at Vasek Pospisil at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. He then pulled out of the Miami Open due to an elbow injury before flying back to the UK for a medical assessment.

Murray is yet to comment on the severity of the issue, however, his brother Jamie has shed some light on the exact problem. Jamie, who is currently playing in the doubles competition at Miami, told British media that the world No.1 has been told to rest after a troublesome couple of months. Earlier this year Murray suffered from a bout of shingles and has also been ill with the flu. Confirming the tear in his brother’s elbow, doubts has been cast over Murray’s Davis Cup participation.

“Obviously it’s some sort of tear in his elbow so he needs to rest. He said he can do everything except serve, and he told me rest was all he had to do,” Jamie was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying.
“I am not planning that he is going to be there, but if he is then obviously it’s great for the team and we’ll see what happens, but the most important thing for him is just to get healthy because he has had a few issues now. He’s had shingles and he has had his elbow, he was sick here as well for two or three days.”

Britain will play France in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup between April 7th – 9th. The tie will be held indoors on the clay at the Kindarena in Rouen, France. In 2015 Murray played an instrumental role in guiding the British team to their first Davis Cup title since 1936.

The setback comes ahead of a critical second part of the season for the Brit. Last year Murray reached 12 tournament finals between May-November, winning a total of nine titles. As a consequence, he has a high tally of points to defend throughout the last six months of the season.

According to his schedule, the 29-year-old is scheduled to play at the Monte Carlo Masters. It is however unclear if he will recover in time for the tournament, which will start on April 17th.
