ATP Antwerp: David Goffin beats Florian Mayer in straight sets, as Kyle Edmund edges David Ferrer in the tie-break of the third set

David Goffin converted on five of his nine break points to beat Florian Mayer 7-5 6-4 in 74 minutes in the European Open in Antwerp.

Goffin got the decisive break in the 12th game to seal the first set 7-5. The Belgian player took a break in the sixth game of the second set for 4-2. He dropped his serve as he was serving for the match at 5-3 but broke for the fifth time to close out the match in straight sets.

The home star will take on Marius Copil, who beat Steve Darcis from Belgium 7-6 (7-3) 6-2. Copil won the tie-break of the first set 7-3 before getting the break in the fifth game of the second set.

British rising star Kyle Edmund upset second seed David Ferrer 6-1 3-6 7-6 (7-3). Ferrer got a break in the seventh game of the decider but made a double fault at 5-4 30-40 as he was serving for the match. Edmund went ahead 6-3 with two aces in the deciseive tie-break and closed out the match 7-3. The young Briton saved seven of the eleven break points he faced.

Edmund will face a quarter final match against Andreas Seppi, who beat Robin Haase 7-5 7-5.

Jan-Lennard Struff upset Gilles Simon 6-4 6-4 to set up a quarter final against Richard Gasquet. Simon dropped his serve five times during the match. Struff qualified for his second semifinal of the year after Kitzbuhel.

Diego Schwartzman got one break in each set to beat US rising star Taylor Fritz 6-4 6-4 and will face fourth seed Pablo Cuevas in the quarter finals.
