Gael Monfils cruised through Joao Sousa 6-3 6-3 to reach the second round at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Monfils, who is ranked World Number 14, won 50 percent of his return points and hit eight aces to extend his winning streak to six consecutive wins, including his title won last week at the Citi Open in Washington.
The Frenchman got a double break in the second and fourth games to open up a 4-0 lead. Sousa got both breaks back to claw his way back to 3-4 but Monfils broke again in the eighth game for 5-3 before serving out to 15 to win the first set.
Monfils broke serve at deuce in the fifth game of the second set to take a 3-2 lead as Sousa made a double fault. Monfils got the double break in the ninth game to close out the match 6-3 after a double fault from Sousa.
Monfils will take on either Vasek Pospisil or Jeremy Chardy in the next round.
