The first set was incredibly dramatic. Murray’s defensive skills were in a god-like state, driving Wawrinka mad and making it difficult for him to get a single winner past him. Murray got an early break for 2-1, and kept it throughout the set. The Brit continued to push Wawrinka’s service games, getting two more break points, while remaining flawless on his own serve. The last game was incredibly dramatic, with 3 break points to face, Murray took the second set point and ended the set after 53 minutes.
Murray kept a steady hand in the second set, getting two breaks to lead 4-1, and didn’t let up. Murray brought his best service performance, losing only 3 points on his serve. He took the one-sided second set 6-2 after 27 minutes. In the third set, Murray had break points for 2-1, which he would later to come to rue. Murray folded under pressure, when serving at 4-5. This was the first really horrendous service game from Murray. He was up 40-30, but made 3 unforced errors, giving the set to Wawrinka. This didn’t break Murray’s spirit, as he took an early break in the fourth set, and broke again for 5-2. Murray then served the match out, ending it with a winner.
“I knew today if I wanted to win I would have to play one of my best clay court matches,” Murray said during his on-court interview. “Stan’s record here the last two years have been unbelievable. I’ve played one of my best matches today and I am looking forward to the final.”
Murray has become the first British man to reach the final of Roland Garros in 79 years, since Bunny Austin managed to do so in 1937. “I’m extremely proud, I never expected to reach the final here. I have always struggled on the clay, but in the last two years I have had some of my best results.” Murray said on reaching the final. “I’m very proud to reach the final and I hope that I can put on a good match.”
