Nick Kyrgios has not decided who will be his coach after he stopped working with his coach Todd Larkham last June. Australian Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt, who has worked with Kyrgios this year, will continue working with the 20-year-old player occasionally in 2016. The young Aussie has not decided who will coach him next year.
Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash believes that John McEnroe could be the right choice for Kyrgios who reached two Grand Slam quarter finals at Wimbledon in 2014 and at the 2015 Australian Open.
“I know John is a big fan of Nick. John would be a good person to take advice from. Nick is his own person really. He tends to want to do it his own way”, said Cash.
McEnroe has been critical of Kyrgios but has always acknowledged his great potential. He made critical comments on Kyrgios’ behaviour on ESPN during last year’s US Open when Andy Murray beat Kyrgios.
“You don’t want to be remembered as a clown. You want to be remembered as a player. I hope he learns from these bonehead moves. He should be a seed already, at least 20. He should better step up. Otherwise he won’t be talked about too much. He is like a Vaudeville entertainer”, said McEnroe.
“John has got some pretty strong opinions but Nick is more than a Vaudeville act, he is a quality player. He needs to be consistent to pull off a big Grand Slam win and I think that he can do that. Whether he can be consistent enough to be consistent enough to be a top-5 player, or Number 1 in the world, I don’t know. I am not even sure if Nick wants to be top flyer or Number 1, maybe he doesn’t want to be, If I was coaching him, I would be trying to get him ready to be consistent enough to win seven consecutive matches you need to, to win a Grand Slam, and if you become Top 5 in the world, that is a bonus”, said Pat Cash
