In his press conference before the start of the tournament, Roger Federer in Basel talked about Novak Djokovic and his dominance over tennis. Roger also spoke of the two Slam finals he lost to the Serb and his chances to defend the title in Basel.
Roger Federer is back at home in Basel to compete at the Swiss Indoors Basel 2015. The 6-time champion will be bidding to defend his title, having won the title last year beating David Goffin in the final.
The Swiss hasn’t had an easy time in tennis after the US Open final he lost to Novak Djokovic. Roger was overtaken as World No.2 by Andy Murray and lost the only match he has played since Flushing Meadows, in his debut encounter in Shanghai, where he was the defending champion.
Speaking to the media before the start of the tournament, Roger revealed these past weeks haven’t been easy for him.
“Losing to Ramos in Shanghai has had both a positive and a negative effect. On the negative side, my confidence has been affected. On the positive side, I got to practice in Dubai, especially physically. Then I got to come here to Switzerland early and now I feel like I have found my good rhythm” said Roger in Basel.
Roger also spoke about his chances to defend the title.
“My goal is to defend the title, but it will not be easy. This is the only ATP 500 that is played this week, so it is normale that there are many tough players. With Stan Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal I feel like we do have a solid base. The last part of the season is always tough, everyone is tired”.
Roger played a season not many thought he still had in him. The 34-year-old reached two Grand Slam finals, but was twice beaten by Novak Djokovic. The Serb has had so far the best season of his career, very close to reaching a historic calendar Grand Slam, if he hadn’t lost the French Open final to Stan Wawrinka.
The Swiss talked about the two chances missed and about Novak’s dominance over men’s tennis.
“We have to accept that Novak has been the best player of the season. I could have played better in those two finals, but I can’t really be disappointed for my level and for the incredible support I received from the crowd”.
Federer will be playing in Basel for the 16th time. Roger’s debut in Basel is dated 1998, when he lost to Andre Agassi.
