Cilic was on the verge of defeat when he had to save a match point at 4-5 30-40 with an ace before edging the Chinese player with 7-4 in the tie-break. Three-time Shanghai semifinalist and number 15th seed Feliciano Lopez beat qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov 6-4 7-6 (7-3) setting up a second-round match against Dominic Thiem who beat Yen Hsun Lu 6-3 6-3. Thiem broke serve three times and did not drop his serve.
Ivo Karlovic, who broke Goran Ivanisevic’s ace record last week in Beijing during the lost match against Pablo Cuevas, beat Jeremy Chardy 6-4 7-6 (8-6). Karlovic broke serve early in the first set to win the first set with 6-4. Chardy earned the only break point of the second set, which Karlovic saved. In the tie-break Karlovic rallied from 1-4 to win 8-6 setting up a second round match against Rafa Nadal
