Sebastian Baez overcame Francisco Comesana 7-6 (7-5) 2-6 6-1 in an Argentine quarter final clash in 2 hours and 20 minutes to advance to the semifinals at the Ion Tiriac Open in Bucharest.
Baez won 53% of point on Comesana’s second serve and broke four times.
Comesana converted his third break point in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Baez pulled back on serve in the 10th game to draw level to 5-5. Baez rallied from 3-5 down by winning four consecutive points to seal the tie-break 7-5.
Comesana broke twice in the second and eighth games to win the second set 6-2. Baez earned three breaks in the first, fifth and seventh games to win the third set 6-1.
“It was hard because it is always tough to play against a fellow Argentine. I am happy with my level and his level too because he is doing very well. I am happy to be in the next round”, said Baez.
Baez set up a semifinal clash against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics, who cruised past Christopher O’Connell 6-0 6-4. Fucsovics broke three time to take a bagel in the first set. Fucsovics broke in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. O’Connell broke back in the seventh game and held serve to draw level to 4-4. Fucsovics earned another break on his second match point to seal the second set 6-4.
Flavio Cobolli beat Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to reach the third semifinal in his career. Cobolli beat Richard Gasquet earlier this tournament to stop an eight-match losing streak. Cobolli will face either Damir Dzumhur or Pedro Martinez.
Cobolli converted his second break point in the first game to open up a 2-0 lead. Misolic broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Cobolli went up a break in the first game to take a 3-2 lead, but Misolic pulled back to draw level to 4-4. Cobolli rallid from 1-4 down to win the tie-break 7-5.
