Sunday features third round matches in both the men’s and women’s singles draws.

The winners of the last three WTA 1000 events will collide in a blockbuster third round matchup on Sunday, as Doha champion Amanda Anisimova takes on Dubai and Indian Wells champ Mirra Andreeva.  Other WTA action sees 2022 Miami Open champ Iga Swiatek face Elise Mertens, while Karolina Muchova plays Elina Svitolina.

The ATP also provides many clashes between seeded players on Sunday, including recent Dubai champ Stefanos Tsitsipas facing American Sebastian Korda.  In a half of the draw that already lost Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev before the end of the first week, there is plenty of room for players to forge new ground in Miami.

Each day, this preview will analyze the two most intriguing matchups, while highlighting other notable matches on the schedule.  Sunday’s play gets underway at 11:00am local time.

Sebastian Korda (24) vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas (9) – Not Before 1:00pm on Stadium

Tsitsipas underperformed during 2024, going just 8-4 at the Majors, and finishing outside the top 10 for the first time since 2018.  But with his father seemingly gone for good from his coaching team, Stefanos has appeared a bit less negative on court.  Last month in Dubai, he picked up his first hard court title since 2023, defeating five top 50 players.  Tsitsipas is now 11-5 this season, yet he’s just 9-6 lifetime in Miami.

Korda ended his 2024 season early to undergo right elbow surgery, yet quickly returned to form in his first tournament of 2025, reaching the final in Adelaide.  However, Sebi arrived in Miami having lost four of his last five matches, before ousting American wild card Eliot Spizzirri on Friday.  Korda was a quarterfinalist here back in 2021.

2021 is also when Sebi’s only match against Stefanos occurred, when the Greek beat the American after two tight sets in Cincinnati.  And with Korda struggling to win matches since the Adelaide final two-and-a-half months ago, I like Tsitsipas’s chances to advance after another tight contest.

Amanda Anisimova (17) vs. Mirra Andreeva (11) – Not Before 7:00pm on Stadium

Andreeva is 20-3 on the year, and is currently on a 13-match winning streak, after comfortably overcoming Veronika Kudermetova on Friday with the loss of only two games.  During this streak, Andreeva has defeated Sabalenka, Swiatek (twice), and Rybakina (twice).  This fortnight is Mirra’s Miami Open debut.

Right before Andreeva started this streak, Anisimova won the biggest title of her career in Doha.  The 23-year-old American recently debuted inside the top 20, which must be gratifying after years of dealing with injuries, and after taking an extended break from the sport to focus on her mental health.  Amanda is just 4-5 lifetime in Miami, despite this being the biggest event in her home state of Florida.

In their first career meeting, Andreeva must be favored.  Anisimova’s formidable serve and backhand cannot be discounted, but for the past month, Andreeva has clearly been the best player in the world.  And Mirra possesses an extremely imposing serve and backhand of her own.

Other Notable Matches on Sunday:

Grigor Dimitrov (14) vs. Karen Khachanov (22) – Dimitrov was the runner-up here a year ago, but has struggled with injuries ever since, retiring mid-match at five different tournaments.  He is 4-1 against Khachanov, yet Karen claimed their last encounter in straight sets, just a few months ago in Bercy.

Karolina Muchova (15) vs. Elina Svitolina (22) – Muchova only had to play six games on Friday, as Victoria Azarenka was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury.  On the same day, Svitolina impressively defeated an in-form Belinda Bencic by the score of 6-1, 6-2.  Elina has claimed both prior meetings against Karolina, though they haven’t played in nearly six years.

Elise Mertens (27) vs. Iga Swiatek (2) – For the second time in as many tournaments, Swiatek eliminated Caroline Garcia in straight sets to open her Miami Open campaign.  She’s surprisingly only played Mertens once, beating her in straights last April on clay.

Lorenzo Musetti (15) vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime (18) – Musetti required a third-set tiebreak to win his opening round against Quentin Halys.  Lorenzo has split six prior meetings with Felix, most recently defeating him in the bronze medal match of last summer’s Paris Olympics.

Camilo Ugo Carabelli (LL) vs. Novak Djokovic (4) – Djokovic ended a three-match losing streak with a straight-set victory over Rinky Hikikata on Friday.  Ugo Carabelli is a 25-year-old from Argentina making his Masters 1000 debut with a visit to the third round, after upsetting Alex Michelsen in three sets.

Francisco Cerdundolo (23) vs. Tommy Paul (12) – Paul survived a three-set test in the last round from Alexander Bublik.  But he has lost four of six matches against Cerundolo, though their only hard court one went to Tommy.  None of their six matches have been decided in straights sets.
