Joao Fonseca beat Ugo Humbert 6-4 6-3 at the Miami Open to reach the third round at a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in his career. The Brazilian player becomes the youngest player to achieve this feat since Carlos Alcaraz in Paris Bercy in 2021.
Fonseca earned an early break to love in the first game. The 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals champion held on his next service games and served out the first set with a hold at 15 to win the first set 6-4.
Fonseca broke Humbert in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead lead. He never looked back and sealed the win with a break on his third match point.
Fonseca dropped just four points on his serve to improve to 3-2 in his head-to-head matches against top 20 players.
“When the crowd is with any player, they are more hyped. I started the match today super relaxed, with no nerves. That was good, I served well. I had a quick break, he was maybe a little bit more nervous in the beginning, but I started well and that’s what made the difference”, said Fonseca. “Against lefties, they like the crosscourts with their forehand. My backhand today was pretty good and I had the chance to play more aggressively with my forehand. I didn’t let him have opportunities on my serve [either].”
