Carlos Alcaraz believes he will claim the Australian Open title at some stage in his career which is the only Grand Slam trophy missing from his collection.
The Spaniard has won Wimbledon twice, the US Open in 2022 and the French Open this year. He is one of only four men in the Open Era to have won four major trophies by the age of 21. The other players to do so are Boris Becker, Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander. This season he became only the sixth man in the Open era to win the French Open and then Wimbledon immediately after.
However, Alcaraz is yet to conquer the Australian Open which is the event where he made his Grand Slam debut back in 2021. His best result was a run to the quarter-finals in 2024 before losing to Alexander Zverev.
“I am sure that I will be champion of Australia sooner or later. Let’s hope it is this year (next year),” news agency EFE quoted Alcaraz as saying earlier this week.
Whilst he is confident about his ability, Alcaraz admits he has a tough task given the caliber of his rivals. Jannik Sinner will be the defending champion in Melbourne, Daniil Medvedev has reached the final in three out of the last four editions and Novak Djokovic will be bidding to win the major for a record 10th time. Then there are others such as Zverev and Casper Ruud hunting for their first Grand Slam trophy.
“They will demonstrate everything they have worked to achieve a good result,” he commented.
One of the most intriguing partnerships in 2025 will be Novak Djokovic’s collaboration with Andy Murray which is currently expected to last until the end of the Australian Open. Alcaraz has hailed the two joining forces by saying ‘it’s going to be incredible for tennis.’ He went on to describe Murray as the ‘right coach‘ for the Serbian.
Alcaraz will also be entering into the new year with a different team setup after deciding to hire Samuel Lopez as a second coach. Lopez has previously worked with Pablo Carreno Busta for nine seasons, as well as former world No.1 Juan Carlo Ferrero. Ferrero has been Alcaraz’s main coach since he was 15.
The Australian Open will begin on January 12th. If Alcaraz wins the tournament, he will be only the second Spanish man to do so after Rafael Nadal.
