Poland beat Czech Republic 2-1 in the quarter final to set up a Billie Jean King Cup semifinal against Italy. Iga Swiatek clinched two wins in singles and doubles.
Marie Bouzkova beat Magdalena Frech 6-1 4-6 6-4 to give Czech Republic a 1-0 lead. Bouzkova broke three times to win the first set 6-1. The Czech player earned two break points to take a 2-0 lead in the second set. Frech saved these two chances. The Pole broke Bouzkova to take a 5-4 lead and served out at 15. Both players traded breaks in the second and third games of the third set. Boouzkova earned three match points at 0-40 on Frech’s serve and broke on her first chance with a big backhand to seal the win.
World number 2 Iga Swiatek battled past Czech teenager Linda Noskova 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-5 after 2 hours and 39 minutes to keep the Polish hopes alive of qualifying for the semifinals. Noskova was playing her match point since the US Open.
Noskova fired a backhand winner into the corner to break for 6-6, as Swiatek was serving for the first set. Noskova misfired on the reply to give Swiatek a 5-3 lead. Swiatek hit two unreturned serves at 5-4 to win the first set after 70 minutes. Neither player was pushed to deuce until 4-4 in the second set. Noskova hit volleys to break for 5-4 and closed out the second set with consecutive backhand winners.
Swiatek broke in the fourth game to open up a 4-1 lead. Noskova pulled back on serve to draw level to 4-4. Swiatek held serve for 6-5 and forced Noskova to serve to stay in the match. Swiatek fired a forehand winner to earn two match points. The Pole sealed the win on her second match point with a return winner.
Iga Swiatek and Katarzyna Kawa beat Marie Bouzkova and Karolina Siniakova 6-2 6-4. The Polish team broke twice in the sixth and eighth games to win the first set 6-2 and went up a double break to build a 6-2 4-0. Bouzkova and Siniakova pulled both breaks back to draw level to 4-4. Swiatek and Kawa clinched the decisive break on their match point in the 10th game.
