Tomas Machac upset Tommy Paul 3-6 6-4 6-1 at the Shanghai Rolex Masters setting up a quarter final match against Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Gael Monfils 6-4 7-5. Machac has moved into the top 30 for the first time in his career.
Paul looked to be in control when he was leading by a set and a break in the second set, but Machac turned around the match.
Paul saved two break points in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Machac fended off four break points to hold on his serve for 3-3. Paul converted his fourth break point at deuce to take a 5-3 lead and served out the first set with a hold at 15.
Paul went up a break at 15 in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Machac broke straight back to draw level to 2-2. The Czech player closed out the win with a break on his fourth set point.
Machac broke serve at love in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. Paul saved a match point as he was serving to stay in the set in the eighth game, but Machac served out the win on his second match point in the ninth game.
Machac has reached his seventh ATP Tour quarter final and his second at Masters 1000 level after losing to Jannik Sinner in March this year. He is the third Czech player to reach the quarter final in Shanghai after Tomas Berdych (2012, 2014-2016) and Radek Stepnek (2009 and 2012)
